BIO VILLAGE: EXHIBITION AREAS AND WORKSHOPS TO PRESENT NEW SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES, INNOVATIVE TRENDS AND USEFUL TRANSITION SUPPORT

Agriculture and livestock farming are undergoing a difficult time. The high quality of the Italian production model and the great efforts of agricultural businesses are not being properly recognized, above all at economical level. In this context, the transition to organic farming and breeding represents a useful opportunity. The BIO VILLAGE, a great novelty of Cremona International Livestock Exhibitions 2016, aims at helping companies to discover more from a technological, economical and a regulatory point of view. The BIO VILLAGE will host exhibition areas where Exhibitors could present particular solutions and systems for organic breeding and farming and a workshop area where the key-issues of the sectors will be widely explored. Workshops will be organized in cooperation with the most qualified institutions and research centers such as CREA-FLC from Lodi.

A MARKET WITH GREAT POTENTIAL

Over the last 15 years, the organic products market has increased fivefold thus reaching a turnover of 60 billion euros in 2014. According to the 2016 report “The Wolrd of Organic Agriculture” by FiBL and IFOAM, the European volume of sales is worth 26 billion euros. The Italian organic sector has reached the value of 2.1 billion euros (figures by Ismea), thus showing a sixfold growth in comparison to the beginning of the 2000s. This extremely positive trend is also supported by the 337% growth that the Italian exports have registered since 2008 (figures by Nomisma).

HIGHER PROFITABILITY FOR COMPANIES

A recent research by the Washington State University shows that organic farming can be up to 35% more profitable than conventional farming. This study is a long-term analysis of the financial sustainability of organic farming: 44 case-studies referring to 40 years of organic production and 55 plant species cultivated in 14 countries over the 5 continents have been examined.

ORGANIC MILK: A 28% HIGHER AVERAGE PRICE

We are at a stage in history when Italian livestock farms can hardly cover the costs of milk production. An interesting opportunity is offered by organic milk, whose average price is 28% higher than conventional milk (with a best price of 50 cents pro liter), as Ismea explained during the last edition of Cremona International Livestock Exhibitions. According to Sinab there are currently 45 thousand heads of dairy cattle intended for organic milk production in Italy. This means 20% of the total number of heads of cattle in organic breeding farms. In 2016 over 300 million liters organic milk were produced (over 2.7% of the total) for a value of about 160 million euros.
